PERSONAL TRAINER: YOU NEED ONE

TOP 5 REASONS YOU NEED TO HIRE A CERTIFIED PERSONAL TRAINER

#5 SAFETY

There’s youtube, free online programs and videos, and many other online resources to get your fitness program started. Some are even meant for beginners. These are wonderful resources and can be a great starting point for many. However, these resources are not taking into account your unique needs.

Perhaps you’ve had past injuries, really dislike certain exercises, or are simply not sure if you can perform certain exercises so you try them out anyway. This could potentially lead to injury. A certified personal trainer will conduct an initial assessment to ensure that the exercises you will be performing are appropriate for your current fitness level and physical limitations. Also, if you do in-person personal training, there is someone there to correct your form. Improper form could lead to injury or future problems.

#4 EXPERT PROGRAMMING

The National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) is considered the gold standard when it comes to fitness accreditation. The American Council of Exercise (ACE) Personal Trainer Certification, which is the certification that I possess, is accredited by the NCCA.

When a personal trainer is certified and that certification is accredited by the NCCA, you can rest assured that the trainer at the very least, had to prove that they understand the basics of programming, client assessments, and considerations for special populations. All of this information is then synthesized by the personal trainer to come up with an appropriate workout program for you that will help you effectively achieve your goals.

#3 ACCOUNTABILITY

One major benefit when hiring a certified PT is accountability. It is very easy to skip your workout or cut your workout short when there is no one to hold you accountable. A personal trainer will definitely hold you accountable for your physical fitness. When you have to answer to another human being, you feel more motivation (and perhaps a little more pressure) to show up and give it your all with no cheating.

#2 ADHERENCE

Adherence to a workout program is one of the most challenging aspects of your wellness journey. When you have someone holding you accountable it helps you adhere to your workout program. Also, the trainer will provide you with motivation when you are running low. This motivation can come in many forms.

I try to find creative ways to motivate my clients beyond verbal praise. For example, I encourage my clients to try something new such as running a 5K, going to a yoga class, etc. I call these “personal training field trips.” I typically join my clients to provide moral support. When my clients find a physical activity they enjoy that is outside of our training program, they are typically more likely to adhere to our workout program in order to support this new “extra-curricular” activity they discovered. This also makes it more likely that they found a life-long habit because they genuinely enjoy doing it!

#1 GOAL ACHIEVEMENT

You may have a goal in mind when you start a workout program on your own but how to get there? Along with expert programming, a personal trainer can provide you with exercises that will directly help you achieve your unique fitness goal. Perhaps it’s running a full marathon, losing weight, or gaining muscle mass. There are different exercises and exercise modifications a personal trainer can program into your workouts in order for you to achieve your goal. Additionally, a personal trainer is literally the only other person besides you who has a stake in you achieving your fitness goals.

CONCLUSION

Some of these you might have already guessed, but I encourage you to reach out to a personal trainer you feel you can connect with. This is important. If you and your trainer vibe together, this will make the impact the trainer has even greater on your fitness journey.
